Experts unveil business acumen of Euphrosyne of Polotsk

MINSK, 3 February (BelTA) – The gift of Euphrosyne of Polotsk as a practical, solid, and purpose-driven individual manifested itself not only in construction, tour guide Sofia Macharashvili said in the latest episode of the V Teme. Nashi [On Point. The Nation’s Pride] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
Sofia Macharashvili emphasized the significance of actions the scale of which grew as Euphrosyne of Polotsk matured. “As a person fully integrated into the Church, she built a church, even two, with a burial vault. Just imagine the things she personally created. Indeed, she found architect John. She had help from builders, workers… All of that is true. But it was she who proposed the idea, took it upon herself, and elevated the status of the city of Polotsk to such heights! This cannot be denied; this cannot be overlooked. Whether she was 15, 17, 18, or 20 years old is not the point. The point is that she undertook the construction of two churches at once on the grounds of what is now the Savior-Euphrosyne convent. That is where the immense experience and life purpose of a person lie - in creation,” she emphasized.

Influencer, film critic, artist, and blogger Ksenia Leshchinskaya also highlighted a fact that speaks to the young princess’s strength of will. “Entering a monastery at that time wasn’t difficult, but to persist there... Yes, one could copy books, read texts, but to initiate such a construction project… That, in part, attests to her entrepreneurial mindset. Not many men possess that even today,” she said.

According to the blogger, the strength of Euphrosyne of Polotsk was her sincerity. “Firstly, she did all of this out of her own sincerity; she had some inner need for it. Secondly, she possessed certain resources but could have used them differently. She could have spent a few years in the monastery and then return to her wealth, to being a princess, to marriage, to uniting lands. She could have directed her entrepreneurial talent toward building a new canal or fortress, annexing lands, and so on,” Ksenia Leshchinskaya noted.

"Euphrosyne's gift as a practical, solid, and purpose-driven individual is very aptly noted, and not just in construction,” Sophia Macharashvili added recalling one of the most important relics. “She acted in the same manner with the famous cross, which we now call the Cross of Euphrosyne of Polotsk (crafted in 1161 by jeweler Lazar Bogsha on her order. The cross disappeared during the early years of the Great Patriotic War. She paid the money, 40 grivnas to Lazar Bogsha. It was a significant sum. And she accomplished this, she achieved it. We call her Euphrosyne the Great, but someone might ask: what was great about her? She was able to achieve so much back then, in the 12th century. As they say, you don't choose the times,” she added.
