Delyagin on U.S. policy in the Middle East: ‘They seek to become the West’s energy powerhouse’

MINSK, 5 April (BelTA) – The United States of America is striking the Middle East to become the energy powerhouse of the West, Mikhail Delyagin, Deputy Chairman of the Economic Policy Committee of the Russian State Duma and Doctor of Economics, said in a recent episode of BelTA’s V Teme [On Point] project.

Mikhail Delyagin noted that the Middle East had long served as the West’s primary energy supplier. Then the United States began vying for that role. In the 2010s, seeking a competitive edge in the energy sector, the U.S. started deploying efficient technologies to extract gas and oil from shale rock. This development later became known as the “shale revolution”.

“America wants to become the West’s energy powerhouse,” the economist argued. “And to elevate its own standing, it must destroy the Middle East. So when Trump says, ‘We don’t need the Strait of Hormuz, we don’t use it,’ he is being honest. For him, the Strait of Hormuz is a rival. If it were shut (putting aside the issue of gasoline prices), that would be the ultimate dream of American foreign policy.”
