Lukashenko confident in Belarus' coronavirus strategy

SMOLEVICHI DISTRICT, 20 April (BelTA) – Belarus has chosen the right tactics to combat coronavirus, Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he visited the Church of the Annunciation in Malye Lyady village in Smolevichi District at Easter on 19 April, BelTA has learned.

“I do not see any mistakes so far. Anything can happen. However, even you, people who are not so much involved in it, see that Belarusians have chosen the right path. I proceeded from the fact that people are responsible for their own lives and they know better what to do than me or God,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

The president is confident that Belarusians will go through it with dignity. “Easter celebrates the victory of the good over the evil, this is an example of self-sacrifice. Therefore, we should not hide ourselves behind the church walls or be afraid to enter a church. He had no fear, He sacrificed his life for people. Why have we hidden ourselves? Life will put this question to someone some day. We should keep it in mind,” the head of state said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko explained that he decided to drop traditional congratulations, as many people are worried about the situation in the country. “Let us be frank: in line with our Constitution, a lot depends on the president in our country. I am telling you honestly and frankly about the policy this government will stick to. It will become clear who is right and who is wrong four or five months from now when people will go to the polls to choose their leadership. No one will force you into anything, you will be free to make your own choice. However, I assure you that the forthcoming election in our country will be fair. We will tell you frankly and openly about the future; we will tell you about the state of things in our country at present and its development in the future,” the Belarusian leader said.

He noted that pneumonias that are making headlines right now are just a small part of all life-threatening diseases. “We have many people with cardiovascular diseases, cancer, diabetes and obesity,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

The president noted that the death rate associated with coronavirus pneumonias is very small. These are people whose health was destroyed by other diseases. In this regard, he called on elderly people, in particular those with chronic diseases, to seek medical help as soon as they develop symptoms and not to resort to self-treatment. “Take care of yourselves, keep it in mind. Our doctors are doing a great job: they have already found their bearings and save even the most difficult patients,” Aleksandr Lukashenko said.

“If you make a small step towards your health, the things will get better tomorrow. Everything depends on us. I promise you that our authorities- no matter whether you like them or not – will do everything to protect you. However, you just need to make a small step towards your health, towards your dreams. If we stay together, everything will be alright,” the head of state noted.
