Lukashenko expresses condolences over passing of Patriarch Irinej of Serbia

MINSK, 23 November (BelTA) – Belarus President Aleksandr Lukashenko has expressed condolences to Serbia President Aleksandar Vucic over the passing of Patriarch Irinej of Serbia, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian leader.

“It is with deep sorrow that I have learned the news about the passing of His Highness Patriarch Irinej of Serbia. A very wise and noble person, who dedicated his life to the selfless service to God, his Homeland and people, passed away. Over the period when he was the leader of the Serbiaт Orthodox Church, the Republic of Serbia made significant progress in the enhancement of sovereignty and independence, civil peace and stability, preservation of the spiritual, cultural and historical legacy. In my opinion, Patriarch Irinej played a huge role in it,” the message reads.

According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, Orthodox faith is one of the pillars of closeness between the two nations. “I am very grateful to His Highness for the efforts to expand and promote friendship and cooperation between Belarus and Serbia. The memory of Patriarch Irinej will remain in our hearts forever,” the Belarusian leader stressed.

Saddened by this huge loss, Aleksandr Lukashenko expressed sincere condolences and support to the entire Serbian nation.
