Lukashenko criticizes mindless construction, overpopulation in big cities

MINSK, 21 April (BelTA) – It is necessary to stop mindless construction and movement of people to big cities, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko said as he was visiting the agro-town of Kopys during his working trip to Vitebsk Oblast on 21 April, BelTA has learned.

The head of state pointed out that there is a great demand for prefabricated houses produced by the Forestry Ministry, and this demand should be met. “We need to produce more of them to meet the demand,” the president remarked. That said, he warned against an unreasonable pricing policy that could cause people to reconsider buying these prefabricated houses.

Speaking about housing policy in general, Aleksandr Lukashenko emphasized that it is necessary to build housing first of all in those communities where there is a demand from enterprises and employers, in other words, accommodation should be built to order. “We should stop this mindless construction and movement of people to big cities,” the president emphasized.

In turn, Forestry Minister Aleksandr Kulik asked the president to allow forestry sector enterprises to sell rental housing to their employees after 10 years of renting and on condition of conscientious work at an enterprise. “It would be great to be allowed to sell this housing to people who have been conscientiously working and renting this property for 10 years...” he said.

Without further ado, the president  responded positively, but with one condition: “Okay, only for the money that was used to build it. No problem.”

“A manager should tell an employee: this is the price. A manager needs to retain workforce. “Do you plan to keep working here?” - “Yes, I do.” This is the main thing - to keep people at their jobs and the price. You pay money, work, sign a contract, if not - goodbye. What's wrong with that? Let an employee buy a house [buy out rental housing], and we will build another one using this money,” added Aleksandr Lukashenko.
