Belarus raises alarm over military build-up in Western neighbors at CSTO PA

MOSCOW, 20 April (BelTA) – The Belarusian delegation drew attention to the growing military expenditures of Poland, Lithuania and Latvia at a meeting of the Council of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organization in Moscow on 20 April, BelTA has learned.

“The systemic crisis in international relations has intensified the global reformatting of the geopolitical landscape. Today’s world is fragile and vulnerable. The rule of force has replaced international law, trust has been lost, and conflict potential has increased,” said Igor Sergeyenko, Chairman of the House of Representatives of the National Assembly of Belarus.
He noted that the idea of using military force as an acceptable tool for achieving one’s goals is increasingly dominating the global agenda. “Venezuela, Cuba, Iran are examples of this. The unprecedented armed aggression against Iran is not only a destabilizing factor for the Middle East and the broader Eastern region, but also an escalation of the global crisis of the entire international system. The consequences of these actions include rising energy prices, disruption of trade routes, blockage of global markets, and the real threat of a nuclear conflict. This once again confirms an immutable truth: every state needs reliable security guarantees to protect its sovereignty and territorial integrity,” Igor Sergeyenko emphasized.

“Today we are seriously concerned about the accelerating negative processes along the perimeter of our southern and western borders. The threats are becoming increasingly tangible. We are talking about the hyper-militarization of Western European countries, the deployment on their territory of new, longer-range offensive weapons, and the stationing of large military formations in immediate proximity to our state border. In 2025, the combined military expenditures of Poland, Lithuania and Latvia exceeded €52 billion. This is dozens of times more than what Belarus allocates for its own defense. All this is happening amid the degradation of arms control mechanisms,” the speaker stated.
