Belarus' MP gives his take on supremacy of international law

MINSK, 1 November (BelTA) – Chairman of the Standing Commission on International Affairs of the House of Representatives Andrei Savinykh told the Glavny Tur YouTube channel how international law correlates with national law, BelTA has learned.

“In general, Belarus is a country that usually looks before it leaps,” the MP said figuratively.

According to him, there has always been supremacy of international law. That is, a country cannot ignore international legislation and should bring a national legislation in compliance with it.

“Yet, we have never put international law above national law,” Andrei Savinykh said.

He explained that if a country joins some international norms, it aligns national legislation with them. “If we do not join some international agreement, it does not apply in our territory. It is common sense to embrace certain norms that we consider sensible and reasonable. This is a demonstration of law-abiding behavior, respect for the law,” the parliamentarian said.
