SEOUL, 14 January (BelTA - Yonhap) - Chung Bora's short story collection
"Your Utopia: Stories" has become the first Korean book nominated for
the Philip K. Dick Award, one of the world's most prestigious honors for
science fiction novels.
According to the list of nominees for the 2025 award published on the award's homepage Friday (U.S. time), the English translation of Chung's work is among six finalists for the award, which recognizes distinguished sci-fi fiction originally published in paperback in the United States.
Translated by Anton Hur and published by Algonquin Books, "Your Utopia: Stories" joins nominees from established and emerging authors in the sci-fi genre.
Other finalists include "City of Dancing Gargoyles" by Tara Campbell, "Time's Agent" by Brenda Peynado, "The Practice, the Horizon, and the Chain" by Sofia Samatar, "Alien Clay" by Adrian Tchaikovsky and "Triangulum" by Subodhana Wijeyeratne.
The Philip K. Dick Award, sponsored by the Philadelphia Science Fiction Society and the Philip K. Dick Trust, has been presented annually since 1983. It honors the legacy of Philip K. Dick, one of the most influential American sci-fi authors of the 20th century.
Winners of the award will be announced on April 18 at Norwescon in SeaTac, Washington.
"Your Utopia: Stories" is a revised edition of the 2021 short story collection titled "Meeting Her" and contains eight stories. It was translated and published in the U.S. last year.
The title story, "Your Utopia," depicts a smart car wandering a desolate planet abandoned by humans due to a pandemic while carrying a broken humanoid robot.
Chung, 49, began her writing career in 1998 and was previously nominated for the 2022 International Booker Prize and the 2023 National Book Award for Translated Literature for "Cursed Bunny," a collection of sci-fi and horror short stories.
