Belarus suggests aligning CIS economic development strategy with Belt and Road initiative

MINSK, 31 May (BelTA) - Belarus proposes to align the new CIS economic development strategy through 2030 with the Belt and Road initiative, Belarus Prime Minister Sergei Rumas told BelTA following a meeting of the CIS Heads of Government Council in Ashgabat, Turkmenistan.

“This year CIS experts got down to work on the new economic development strategy of the CIS through 2030. This is a comprehensive document covering all areas of economic cooperation. We should not just outline the areas of further collaboration but aim for projects and activities that are important for the CIS. During the meeting Belarus suggested aligning appropriate sections of the strategy with the Belt and Road initiative in transport and logistics,” Sergei Rumas said.

He noted that virtually every CIS country is located along the Great Silk Road. In this connection, incorporating the elements of the Belt and Road project into the new CIS strategy of economic development will accelerate the process of integration of national and regional transport and logistics infrastructure into the global network through joint construction of road infrastructure, energy, information-communication and other facilities. “It is in our common interests to coordinate the work and reap as many benefits as possible from the project,” the prime minister said.

Belarus invited the CIS countries to continue discussion on this matter during the international forum on regional cooperation and development as part of the Belt and Road initiative. The forum will be held at the China-Belarus industrial park Great Stone in July.
