MINSK, 21 December (BelTA) – The latest episode of the documentary series Time Chose Us aired by the TV channel Belarus One talked about how YouTube was launched and under what conditions it can be blocked in Belarus, BelTA has learned.

2005 saw the foundation of the planet’s premier video hosting service. One can say that YouTube started out as fun for advanced users, but over time its popularity began to overtake television’s. While in 2005 up to 1 million users watched YouTube content monthly, the number of monthly users rose to 2.5 billion in 2020.

Belarusians bloggers and state-run mass media embraced YouTube as well. As noted by Information Minister Marat Markov, the state-run mass media are very active on the platform.

“The main republican mass media, including BelTA, Belarus Segodnya and TV channels alone have more than 7 million users. A massive avalanche-like demand is in place. It makes no sense to block this platform as long as we can use it. As he met with students at the linguistic university, the president made a very subtle point that should be emphasized. If necessary, if there is a threat to the state through these platforms, we will take decisive measures,” Marat Markov said.

Despite its obvious advantages YouTube has turned into a tool of skillful propaganda over time. Google, the owner of the platform, can remove unnecessary videos and promote the necessary ones without cause and consequences.
