Rapeseed fields bloom in Brest Oblast

BREST, 16 April (BelTA) – Rapeseed fields have started blooming in the south of Brest Oblast, BelTA has learned.

In the southwest of the region, the sown area of winter rapeseed amounts to 73,500 hectares. Farmers have carried out two nitrogen feedings and fully treated the crops against pests; growth regulators have been applied on more than two-thirds of the fields.

Specialists are continuously monitoring and inspecting the crops. “At the moment, the areas of crop loss are insignificant. For us, the main thing is to avoid severe, prolonged frosts, and we haven’t had any. Winter passed normally, and spring weather has been favorable for rapeseed development,” said Vitaly Rud, Deputy Chairman of the Agriculture and Food Committee of the Brest Oblast Executive Committee.

Spring rapeseed sowing has begun in Brest Oblast as well. Its area is small: about 1,500 hectares. Farmers in Pruzhany District were the first to enter the fields. “Spring rapeseed is mainly sown on peatlands and low-lying areas that are most susceptible to frost,” Vitaly Rud explained.

Agricultural enterprises in the southwest are also currently sowing corn and sugar beets and increasing the pace of vegetable crop planting.
