PM: Belarus is committed to long-term and sustainable partnership with Iran

MINSK, 15 January (BelTA) – Belarus is committed to long-term and sustainable partnership with Iran, Belarus’ Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko said as he met with Minister for Industry, Mining and Trade of the Islamic Republic of Iran Dr. Seyed Mohammad Atabak in Minsk, BelTA has learned.

Belarus and Iran are long-time friends and reliable partners, noted Roman Golovchenko. “It is very gratifying that in recent years we have seen intensification of contacts at all levels - from the heads of state to experts. The visit of the Belarusian president to Iran in March 2023, as well as the recent meeting on the sidelines of the BRICS summit last October, were very instrumental for upgrading our relations,” he noted.

Economic contacts are becoming as solid and meaningful as political contacts, the prime minister added. “Starting from 2022, we have seen a steady increase in bilateral trade. In 2022 it grew threefold compared to the previous year. The positive trend remained in place in 2023. I am sure that it will be the case in 2024 as well,” the head of government emphasized.

It is necessary to maintain momentum, the prime minister said. “We are ready to receive Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian on an official visit this year,” said Roman Golovchenko.

The 17th meeting of the joint intergovernmental commission on economic cooperation was also held on 15 January. Belarus and Iran agreed on a cooperation plan for 2025. The document provides for interaction in a wide range of areas, including trade and industry, agriculture, electric engineering, transport, healthcare, education, sports, etc.

According to Roman Golovchenko, the intergovernmental commission should translate political arrangements into specific economic projects in the interests of the two countries. “During the visit of the head of state, an important strategic document was signed - a roadmap for comprehensive cooperation for 2023-2026. The task of the commission is not only to oversee the implementation of the document, but also to initiate new projects in the specified areas. Belarus is committed to a long-term and sustainable partnership with Iran,” Roman Golovchenko remarked.
