Opinion: Migration crisis may set off change of government in Lithuania

MINSK, 26 July (BelTA) – The migration crisis threatens to set off the change of government in Lithuania, analyst Aleksei Dzermant wrote in his Telegram channel, BelTA informs.

“The migration crisis in Lithuania can trigger the process of the change of power there. Spontaneous rallies are staged in the places where refugees are accommodated. For example, people from all over Lithuania came to the town of Dieveniškės for such a rally. Another rally is planned to take place in Vilnius on 29 July,” the expert noted.

The analyst is sure that taking into consideration the inability of the current government to resolve the problem, the failure of the talks of Lithuania's Minister of Foreign Affairs Gabrielius Landsbergis in Iraq and the increased number of flights from Baghdad to Minsk, a number of high-profile Lithuanian politicians began to openly say that ‘the situation can be resolved only by reaching arrangements with Belarus'.

“The EU and the USA made it clear that Lithuania's migrant problem is none of their business. Meanwhile, more than a hundred illegal migrants continue to be detained at the border every day. In the places where several thousands of them are detained, unrest has been reported,” Aleksei Dzermant concluded.
