MP on Belarus-Russia integration: Even demonstration of intent is important today

MOSCOW, 22 March (BelTA) - Even a demonstration of intent to deepen integration between Belarus and Russia is important in the context of global political turbulence, Gennady Davydko, the head of the Information Policy Commission of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia, the chairman of the Standing Commission on Human Rights, National Relations and Mass Media of the House of Representatives of Belarus' National Assembly, said during a meeting of the commission in Moscow on 22 March, BelTA has learned.

“In my opinion, even a demonstration of intent to deepen relations between Russia and Belarus within the framework of the Union State is extremely important at this stage," Gennady Davydko said. “Demonstrating the unity will have a great ideological and propaganda effect. We need to reactivate the projects that have been slow, especially with regard to the information policy. We need the common information field in the Union State. This is extremely important in view of the September parliamentary elections in Russia. The pressure on Belarus will not ease either as the aggressive West has committee serious resources to destroy the Belarusian statehood. It is quite possible that they will be very focused on Russia for some time but Belarus will get its share too. Therefore, now even just a demonstration of integration aspirations within the Union State is of great importance."

The common information policy is at the top of today's agenda, the MP said. “We are meeting face-to-face which shows the desire to break down all barriers, remove the land border between our countries, establish a normal air and rail service, so that people, first of all young people, can travel to Russia as much and easily as possible and communicate with our brothers,” he said

At the meeting, the members of the Parliamentary Assembly were briefed on the status of the guidelines to develop the common information space of Belarus and Russia. The MPs noted that joint work is currently underway in accordance with the plan of measures to create the common information space of the Union State for 2021-2025, which was approved in July 2020. According to the MPs, since then Belarus and Russia have faced new challenges and have come under unprecedented pressure in the international media. In this regard, the appropriate ministries have been asked to review the plan of activities and, if necessary, make adjustments in line with current conditions.
