Italian on life in Belarus: ‘Here, I am completely at ease about my family's safety’

MINSK, 9 February (BelTA) – In Belarus, it is very safe, and girls can go out late in the evening without being afraid of anything, chef Paolo Antonio Vene and his wife Alina Klemantovich said in the latest episode of the Honest Story project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
“Of course, there is a difference. Take villages, for example. In Italy, we basically don’t have them. We have small towns, and these small towns have the necessary infrastructure. They all have central sewage systems, water supply, gas, and all the streets are paved. Here, this isn’t the case in all villages yet, but I think they will get there, and I hope it will be soon. As for cities, Minsk is very clean, I noticed that right away. People are constantly cleaning, working, and everything is very tidy. A girl can walk around the city alone at night and be calm that nothing will happen to her. In Italy, it's not like that. In the late hours, anything can happen. That's why I am completely at ease about my family’s safety here,” Paolo noted.

By the way, he compares Belarus of 2009 when he first visited the country after meeting his future wife online, to Belarus of 2022, when the family moved to Alina's homeland. “Everything had changed by 2022. Huge progress had been made, a tremendous amount of work had been accomplished. The standard of living for Belarusians had risen significantly. I see that this isn't only in Minsk. Everywhere there are major construction projects and residential development to suit any taste. In general, I like Belarus’ domestic policy. It's good. But then, of course, everything depends on the people who lead a particular region or district. If they perform their work well, then things are smooth. It’s like that all over the world. There are cunning politicians in our world too. But the most important thing is that the government, the so-called people in charge, issue the right directives,” the Italian noted.

He sees his mission in life as working and caring for his beloved wife and children. The pizzeria he opened is very popular among Belarusians. “I just work. I want my customers to always be satisfied. I don't work just for money or for some fancy business. Not just to sell. I want anyone who comes to me to get a delicious product and be genuinely happy, because I've realized that Belarusians are somewhat similar to Italians from the southern part of the country. At first, it seems like they are guarded and wear armor. But then, when they make contact and see what kind of person I am, they begin to open up, become friendly, very warm-hearted. Overall, Belarusians are good, kind, and warm people," Paolo said.
