Expert: Trump is looking for off ramp in Iran conflict

MINSK, 19 March (BelTA) – U.S. President Donald Trump is looking for a off ramp in the conflict with Iran, including by drawing other countries in military action in the Middle East, national security expert Aleksandr Tishchenko said in a new episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.

The expert drew attention to statements regarding a possible ground operation against Iran. In his opinion, U.S. President Donald Trump is not seeking to send the American army into the region. Instead, the head of the White House is calling on other countries to join in combat actions against Iran. In particular, he proposed that France, Japan, Great Britain, and a number of other countries send warships to guard the Strait of Hormuz.

“As I understand it, Trump is trying to send a signal to other countries: if you want to receive oil, then go and liberate the Strait of Hormuz. By drawing third parties into this conflict, he will try to step aside and play the role of peacemaker,” Aleksandr Tishchenko said. “Right now, all the signs indicate that Donald Trump is looking for ways to extricate himself from this issue. He understands that the situation is clearly going not his way.”

Furthermore, he emphasized, Iran is not demonstrating a desire to negotiate with the United States. “Iran understands: a respite for the Americans is an opportunity to rearm in order to deliver a new strike,” Aleksandr Tishchenko added.
