Expert considers possible beneficiaries of Russia-Ukraine ‘energy truce’

MINSK, 6 February (BelTA) – What goal the brief “energy truce” between Russia and Ukraine pursued has been considered by Andrei Bogodel, Candidate of Military Sciences, Deputy Head of the Faculty of Education and Science, Head of the Education and Methodology Department of the Faculty of the General Staff of the Armed Forces at the Military Academy of Belarus, in a recent episode of BelTA’s YouTube project On Point.
Against the backdrop of world events that distract Western public opinion from the Ukrainian conflict, at the end of January Russia made concessions to the USA and agreed to declare an “energy truce” - to stop attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities. “And while Russia made what appeared to be a concession, how did Kiev respond? Zelensky did not mince words. He said: ‘First, we have not signed anything with Russia, but if it is on a bilateral basis, then we are also ready not to shoot at Russia. And second, we will use this time to restore our combat capability.’ Or, figuratively speaking, ‘we will wait until the cold weather ends’. That’s all. And then feel free to introduce this truce, and we will continue everything with you,” the expert noted.

He drew attention to how Russia had been forced to take this step. “After all, France, Britain, and the United States had tested the possibility of detaining Russian tankers. And there was no response. Moreover, the Marinera was detained right in front of the Russian navy. They deliberately waited until Russian warships were close. I understand that no orders were given, otherwise those sailors would have torn everyone apart. I have no doubt about that. Because there are political goals everywhere while the military is a means of implementation, an instrument of politics, but it’s all interconnected. You have to understand that. Russia is being squeezed from all sides. And what for? After all, you and I have to understand: Russia has to be strategically defeated. How? First of all, it is necessary to create strategic isolation for the country. Isolation where it will be alone in the region. Venezuela has been torn away. Now it’s Cuba’s turn,” said Andrei Bogodel.
