VILNIUS, 12 September (BelTA) – The Days of Belarusian Culture in Lithuania opened with the exhibition of the Belarusian artists of the Paris School, BelTA has learned.
Culture Minister of Belarus Boris Svetlov underlined that it is symbolic that Vilnius was the first city outside Belarus where the exposition was displayed. After all, many of the painters presented in the exposition were born in Belarus, studied in Lithuania and worked in Paris where they rose to fame. The exhibition is an integral part of Belgazprombank's corporate project "Art Belarus". It includes 69 paintings, graphic and sculptural works from the collections of Belgazprombank, the National Art Museum and private collections. It features masterpieces by Marc Chagall, Chaim Soutine and rare sculptures by Ossip Zadkine.
Culture Minister of Lithuania Sarunas Birutis noted that this exhibition is a result of close cooperation of the culture ministries of the two countries. He thanked the Belarusian Embassy in Vilnius and the Lithuanian Embassy in Minsk for their assistance in organizing the exhibition. The minister expressed confidence that Belarus and Lithuania will implement many more interesting projects in the future.
Director of the National Art Museum of Belarus Vladimir Prokoptsov emphasized that Belarus and Lithuania are not just neighbors, but also the countries with the common history and culture. The exhibition is a testimony to that.
The exhibition covers a wide range of trends of classical modernism of the 20th century: fauvism, cubism, suprematism and expressionism. The works of the Belarusian artists are distinguished by their particular worldview, a combination of drama and melancholy, emotional coloring and pronounced visual expression.The exhibition helps understand the connection between modern European art and artistic movements of Belarus and Lithuania.
Taking part in the opening ceremony were representatives of Lithuanian ministries and agencies, cultural figures, Belarusian and Lithuanian diplomats, mass media outlets of the two countries. The exhibition was organized by Belgazprombank, the National Art Museum of Belarus, the Lithuanian Art Museum, the Lithuanian Embassy in Belarus and the Belarusian Embassy in Lithuania.
