CIS members discuss efforts to combat money laundering

MINSK, 20 July (BelTA) – The 17th meeting of the Council of Heads of Financial Intelligence Units of the Commonwealth of Independent States was held online on 19 July, BelTA learned from the press service of the CIS Executive Committee.

Taking part in the videoconference were representatives of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, the CIS Executive Committee, the Council of Commanders-in-Chief of Frontier Troops, the Bureau for the Coordination of the Fight Against Organized Crime and Other Dangerous Types of Crimes on the Territory of the CIS, the CIS Anti-Terrorist Center, the CIS Interstate Anti-Corruption Council, the International Training and Methodology Center for Financial Monitoring, as well as the Eurasian Group on Combating Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism, the CSTO Secretariat, and the Eurasian Economic Commission.

The meeting discussed an 8-point agenda. In particular, the participants of the meeting reviewed the results of the implementation of the decisions of the previous meeting of the Council, efforts to combat money laundering, financing of terrorism and the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction.

Members of the Council approved the concept of Operation Orion, which is aimed at identifying and investigating money laundering cases. They also approved the draft new version of the regulation on the working group on combating money laundering. They took stock of the implementation of the plan to identify persons involved in activities of international terrorist organizations (code name Barrier) in 2020 and Q1 2021 and approved a draft new version of the regulation on the working group on countering the financing of terrorism.

Representatives of the financial intelligence units discussed the establishment of an international center for assessing risks of money laundering and terrorism financing, and a system to exchange information between financial intelligence units of the CIS member states.

In addition, the meeting participants discussed the ongoing International Financial Security Olympiad.

The next meeting of the Council of Heads of Financial Intelligence Units of the Commonwealth of Independent States is to be held in Sochi in October this year.
