CIS foreign ministers confirm intent to deepen equal cooperation in space exploration

MINSK, 17 April (BelTA) – The foreign ministers of the CIS member states have adopted a joint statement to mark the 65th anniversary of Yuri Gagarin’s spaceflight reaffirming their intention to deepen equal cooperation in the peaceful exploration and use of outer space, TASS learned from the CIS Executive Committee.

“The document highlighted the ongoing dialogue among CIS member states on a wide range of issues related to the peaceful exploration and use of outer space. It reaffirms their intention to further strengthen equal cooperation in this field to launch joint, mutually beneficial and practically significant initiatives at the international level,” the committee said following the latest meeting of the CIS Foreign Ministers Council in Moscow.

The joint statement emphasizes that “the exploration and use of outer space must benefit all peoples and countries and be carried out for peaceful purposes in accordance with international law, including the relevant norms of international space law”.

In addition, the document states that “the first human spaceflight by Soviet citizen Yuri Gagarin was a breakthrough of civilizational scale that opened previously unattainable horizons for humanity”. It also underscores that “Yuri Gagarin’s historic achievement is a shared legacy of all CIS member states”.

The statement further highlights the significant and complementary contributions of the former Soviet republics to this historic event, the Executive Committee added.
