Belarusian MP: Subbotniks focus society's efforts on national priorities

MINSK, 18 April (BelTA) - A subbotnik is a Belarusian tradition where society gets together to solve tasks important for the entire nation, Igor Marzalyuk, chairman of the Standing Commission on Education, Culture and Science of the House of Representatives, told the media during the nationwide community clean-up day in Minsk on 18 April, BelTA has learned.

“Any Belarusian subbotnik is always about the concentration of efforts and raising funds to address a task important for the entire nation,” Igor Marzalyuk said.

According to him, a subbotnik is a Belarusian tradition where society gets together to solve tasks important for the entire nation. The funds earned from the spring community clean-up day will be used to set up a permanent exhibition at the National History Museum of Belarus, which is currently under construction, Igor Marzalyuk noted.

Igor Marzalyuk noted that historical exhibitions should showcase key moments of Belarusian nationhood, culture, and the development of the Belarusian people across time and space. This, he says, is crucial for strengthening the national identity, security, and state independence.

“National history is a secular symbol of faith for any nation. It is a sacred remembrance that makes us stronger, more resilient, and more courageous. This is something we must understand,” he stressed.

Clean-up days, according to Igor Marzalyuk, are about Belarusian history, tradition, and nationhood. “Therefore, the decision to donate the money we earn during this clean-up day to the exhibition of the National Historical Museum of Belarus is absolutely right. For me personally, as a historian, this is an indisputable and obvious thing,” he concluded.
