Belarus to spend Br31bn on social purposes in 2024

MINSK, 20 June (BelTA) – Social spending in Belarus will exceed Br31 billion in 2024, Belarus’ Deputy Prime Minister Igor Petrishenko said at a joint meeting of the House of Representatives and the Council of the Republic on 20 June, BelTA has learned.

“The high level of government spending on social purposes ensures the sustainability and viability of the country’s welfare system. In recent years, social spending amounted to at least 12% of GDP. In 2023, Br27 billion was allocated from the budget to finance social services. This year, social expenditure will exceed Br31 billion,” said Igor Petrishenko.

The goals of the government's social policy are to consistently improve the living standards of people and to build an egalitarian society by creating the necessary conditions for self-fulfillment, as well as to provide effective support for vulnerable population groups. Per capita GDP at purchasing power parity increased from $5,800 in 2000 to $24,400 in 2023 (at nominal value $7,900).
