Belarus’ largest flag to be carried through Minsk on 11 May

MINSK, 10 May (BelTA) – Belarus’ state flag, 500 meters long and more than 400 kg heavy, will be carried in Minsk on 11 May, Deputy Chairman of the Belaya Rus public association Andrei Basak told BelTA.

“As part of the celebration of the Day of the State Flag, the State Emblem and the National Anthem of the Republic of Belarus, the Belaya Rus public association and the Federation of Trade Unions of Belarus have decided to hold an action and carry the country’s largest flag,” said Andrei Basak.

He emphasized that the flag is impressive - 500 meters long and 9 meters wide. “The flag will be carried simultaneously by about 700 people. This is due to the fact that the weight of the flag is more than 400 kg. Among the carriers will be mostly men. There are also many women who have expressed their wish to carry the flag, too” the deputy chairman said. The flag has been made by Mogotex Company.

Andrei Basak is sure that the flag carrying event will become one of the brightest moments in the celebrations of the 80th anniversary of the Great Victory. “I would also like to recall that it was 30 years ago, on 14 May 1995, that a referendum was held, where the overwhelming majority of Belarusians voted for our state symbols - the coat of arms and flag, which we have now. Belarusians then voted for their historical destiny, for historical memory, historical continuity. These symbols predetermined the future development of the country and are important for Belarusians. It is with these symbols that Belarus has achieved world recognition and the level of development that we have today,” he emphasized.

“The flag is ready. We have tried to carry it already - everything is fine. This event will be beautiful,” Andrei Basak added.
