Belarus in favor of closer inter-parliamentary ties with Azerbaijan

MINSK, 21 November (BelTA) – Belarus seeks to develop inter-parliamentary cooperation with Azerbaijan, Chairperson of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Natalya Kochanova said during a meeting with Chairwoman of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan Sahiba Gafarova on the sidelines of the regular session of the CIS Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (IPA) Council in St. Petersburg, Russia on 21 November, BelTA learned.

"We recall with great joy your official visit to Belarus. The agreements between our parliaments, the friendship group are of great importance," Natalya Kochanova said. "I would like to return to the issue of signing a new inter-parliamentary agreement. I think it will be right to reinvigorate our cooperation and approaches. Moreover, we have a lot to share. We see really great results in trade and economic cooperation."

The speaker informed Sahiba Gafarova on the upcoming presidential election in Belarus scheduled for 26 January 2025. "We sincerely hope that our colleagues will take part in the observation of the election in our country. We will invite our colleagues from the IPA CIS, the CSTO Parliamentary Assembly and the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia," she emphasized.

Belarus and Azerbaijan share common history. "We stood together to defend the freedom and independence of the Soviet Union, and thus of our countries," Natalya Kochanova added. "We will be happy to welcome children from Azerbaijan for the important patriotic campaign Memory Train in 2025 and for the Children of the Commonwealth Youth Forum which we will host in 2025."
