Lukashenko describes relations with Nizhny Novgorod Oblast as ‘centuries-old’

MINSK, 9 December (BelTA) – The topic of Alexander Nevsky and his marriage to a Belarusian princess was touched upon during a meeting of Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko with Governor of Russia's Nizhny Novgorod Oblast Gleb Nikitin at the Palace of Independence in Minsk on 9 December, BelTA has learned.
During the meeting, the president pointed out that the relations between Belarus and Nizhny Novgorod Oblast go way back. The head of state described how cooperation with this Russian region was gradually built up in various areas, primarily in agriculture and manufacturing industry.

In turn, Gleb Nikitin thanked Aleksandr Lukashenko for the opportunity to meet. He touched upon the president's words about the “centuries-old” relations between Belarus and Nizhny Novgorod Oblast, emphasizing that they are literally ancient.

According to the governor, he recently mentioned this historical fact during an opening of the 2nd All-Russian Sports Games of the Holy Prince Alexander Nevsky, which were held in Nizhny Novgorod in September of this year. Belarusian teams participated in the event.

"Our Blessed Prince Alexander Nevsky was married to Alexandra (Paraskeva) of Polotsk ," he noted. As it is known, she was a Belarusian princess, daughter of Bryachislav Vasilkovich. "In fact, these relationships between the lands have roots in the depths of centuries, when Nizhny Novgorod was founded. It was in 1221, in the year of Alexander Nevsky's birth," Gleb Nikitin said.
