Tokayev: Pandemic exposes vulnerabilities in healthcare, national and global economy

MINSK, 21 May (BelTA) - The pandemic has exposed vulnerabilities in healthcare and economy at the national and global levels, Kazakhstan President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev said at an online meeting of the Supreme Eurasian Economic Council (SEEC) on 21 May, BelTA has learned.

The Kazakhstan leader noted that the pandemic and, as a result, the economic downturn had a serious impact on world development and interrupted the process of globalization.

He also noted that the global economic way of life has changed. The difficult situation is exacerbated by trade and economic conflicts between the world's major economies, and thus the international community is facing new, more complex challenges and tasks.

"Clearly, the pandemic has exposed the vulnerabilities in the healthcare industry and national and global economy. On the other hand, it has given impetus to the intensive development of certain sectors of the economy, namely pharmaceuticals, medical services, bioengineering and digital technologies," the Kazakhstan president said.

In these new conditions it is important to find an effective solution to the most pressing issue: how to overcome the consequences of the economic crisis and get back to the path of economic recovery, the Kazakhstan leader said.
