Informal CIS summit scheduled for late December

MINSK, 30 October (BelTA) - An informal CIS summit will be held at the end of December, CIS Secretary General Sergei Lebedev told the media, BelTA learned.

"A meeting of the CSTO heads of state will be held in Astana on 28 November. The CIS heads of state will traditionally get together at the end of December," Sergei Lebedev said.

The CIS Council of Permanent Plenipotentiary Representatives has convened for a meeting in the CIS Executive Committee in Minsk. The permanent representatives are set to sum up the results of the meetings of the CIS Foreign Ministers Council and the CIS Heads of State Council, and outline the tasks in terms of the implementation of the documents adopted and the agreements reached.

"I can say that we are satisfied with the way these meetings went. First, representatives of almost all states, with the exception of Ukraine and Moldova, were in attendance. They had an engaged discussion of the topical issues of our cooperation. For me, as secretary general, it is important that none of the participants in the meetings expressed any doubts as to the future of the CIS. All speakers suggested new ideas and initiatives to strengthen the CIS, improve and expand our cooperation. The main goal that was set was to increase the efficiency of our cooperation. Today it is relevant, especially in the context of sanctions imposed on many CIS states," Sergei Lebedev stressed.
