MOSCOW, 19 March (BelTA) - The Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO) is ready to provide its peacekeeping units to resolve the conflict in Ukraine if necessary decisions are passed, CSTO Secretary General Nikolai Bordyuzha said as he met with Belarusian journalists in Moscow, BelTA has learned.
Nikolai Bordyuzha said that the President of Ukraine asked the United Nations to send a peacekeeping mission to Donbass. "The CSTO has a peacekeeping capacity. Our peacekeepers continuously undergo corresponding training. If such a decision is taken by the United Nations, we stand ready to provide peacekeeping units,” Nikolai Bordyuzha noted. "Units of which CSTO member countries may be sent on a peacekeeping mission will depend on the decision of the CSTO Collective Security Council. "This will happen only if an appropriate decision is passed,” said Nikolai Bordyuzha.
He also noted that such political-military alliances like NATO and CSTO should not interfere in conflicts in the states that are not members of these organizations. "We believe that it is counterproductive," said Nikolai Bordyuzha. “What is happening in Donbass is a Ukrainian conflict. It should be settled by, first of all, the Ukrainian authorities and residents of Donbass. They should find common ground, reach a consensus and build up cooperation. But I repeat: neither the collective forces of the CSTO nor NATO's capabilities can be used in these events,” he noted.
