Belarus PM names EAEU key tasks

NUR-SULTAN, 25 February (BelTA) – The key tasks for the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) include industrial cooperation, import substitution and food security, Belarusian Prime Minister Roman Golovchenko said at a meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council in an expanded format on 25 February, BelTA has learned.

“We fully support Kyrgyzstan presidency priorities. I would also like to stress the importance of working further to strengthen industrial cooperation, coordinate import substitution processes and ensure food security through a coordinated agro-industrial policy. These are the key tasks of the union, which, in our opinion, will ensure its security and independence,” said Roman Golovchenko.

In his words, to ensure accelerated development it is necessary to activate all possible sources of long-term investment and expand the channels of their flow into the economy. “We consider it vital to create conditions for the refinancing of banks and development institutions to expand the sources and volumes of investment,” the prime minister added.

The Belarusian head of government also stressed the need to finalize some rules for the application of special protective anti-dumping and countervailing measures. “In particular, this applies to the right of veto, the commission's decision on the results of each investigation, the application of protective measures in part of the EAEU. This will improve the mechanism for taking protective measures in the EAEU and will comply with modern international practices," he stressed.

Roman Golovchenko said that considerable work had been done to prepare an agreement on the use of navigation seals in the EAEU to track shipments. “These measures will undoubtedly increase the efficiency of state control over the transportation of goods and accelerate the turnover of goods in the union. It is also necessary to address the issue related to the liberalization of international road transportation of goods,” he said.

The prime minister also touched on the traceability mechanism in the EAEU and stressed the need to finalize the relevant integrated information system. He also noted the importance of implementing the Eurasian Agroexpress project for food exports.

“Eurasian integration develops every year. I am sure that with joint efforts we will be able to solve any issues and reach a new stage of joint development,” Roman Golovchenko said.
