Belarus' machine-tool industry firmly on growth track

MINSK, 29 January (BelTA) - Machine-tool enterprises affiliated with the Belarusian Industry Ministry increased output and exports by one third in 2023, BelTA has learned from the Ministry's press service.

The machine-tool enterprises have ramped up both the output and exports over the past two years.

In 2022, the output rose by 37% year-on-year, in 2023 – by 28%. In 2022 and 2023, the export went up by 38% and 30%, respectively.

“At a time of the sanctions the machine-tool enterprises prioritized the efficiency of import substitution. As of today, we have solved the problems with supplies of critical imported spare parts for machine tool production by means of both production at the Union State enterprises and supplies from friendly countries. Belarusian machine-tool industry managed to adapt to the new realities, not only maintained but also increased the production volumes. It is well equipped to meet additional demand of customers," said Andrei Girzhon, the head of the Machine-Tool Industry Department t the Industry Ministry.

According to him, the strategic goal now is to multiply the output in the shortest possible time and to master the production of new machine tools.

The Industry Ministry is constantly working on the domestic machine-tool industry development creating the conditions for the accelerated development, stimulating the production of competitive domestic products.

Ten R&D tasks are carried out within the Machine-Building Equipment subprogram of the state scientific and technical program Innovative Machine-Building and Technologies, with the total funding of Br21 million.

New samples of world-class machine tool equipment were developed as part of the subprogram last year. These included grinding semiautomatic machine with CNC of particularly high accuracy (Krasny Borets machine tool plant), five-axis CNC turning and milling machining center (StankoGomel), grinding center with CNC (Krasny Borets machine tool plant).

The intergovernmental agreement and the roadmap for the development of cooperation between Belarus and Russia in the machine tool industry signed last year will contribute to the active development of the industry.

The agreement provides for the implementation of joint programs and projects, mutual exchange of scientific and technical information and much more. The roadmap is a step-by-step plan of cooperation to set up centers of competences at machine-tool enterprises of Belarus and Russia, their development in terms of designing modern machine-tool equipment, and the implementation of the Union State machine-tool industry development program. Plans are in place to implement a joint project of machine tool production with 100% localization of components manufactured in the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation.

There are also plans to introduce progressive global practices in machine-tool construction at domestic machine-tool enterprises with the participation of Chinese companies. A number of Chinese partners have expressed their willingness to develop cooperation with Belarusian machine-tool plants in launching large-scale assembly of machine-tool equipment with subsequent localization.
