MINSK, 23 January (BelTA) - Belarus has released a pilot batch of domestic electric cars and is working on batteries for them, First Deputy Chairman of the Presidium of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus (NASB) Sergei Chizhik said on the margins of the exhibition of achievements in science, technology and innovation of Belarus at the National Academy of Sciences.
The Joint Institute of Mechanical Engineering of the NASB and BelGee has developed an electric passenger car. “We have achieved almost 70% of localization, that is, electric motors, electronics, control programs are Belarus-made. We also assemble batteries. We are running tests on the cars. A pilot batch has already been released,” Sergei Chizhik said.
“We cooperate with MAZ to produce electric trucks. We also have our own commercial vehicle for different conditions. Today we are presenting our prototypes. If someone finds it profitable, interesting and successful, we are willing to cooperate,” he stated.
We are also working on our own batteries for electric cars, he added. “We are trying to replace lithium with sodium. We made laboratory samples of cells [for the batteries] and are testing them on smaller vehicles. But, certainly, this will require large investments if we are to develop it for large-scale production,” Sergei Chizhik said.
The NASB exhibition features over 300 Belarusian developments across several clusters: Medicine and Pharmaceutics; Industry 4.0. Microelectronics. Artificial Intelligence; Ecology. Biotechnology; Smart Agriculture; Social and Humanitarian Development; National Security. The main purpose of this exhibition is to demonstrate the results of research and developments of Belarusian science, state innovation programs and efforts to strengthen ties between science and production.
