MINSK, 3 September (BelTA) – World number one Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus has advanced to the US Open semifinal without playing a point, BelTA has learned.
In the quarterfinal, the reigning US Open champion was scheduled to face world number 60 Marketa Vondrousova of the Czech Republic. However, her opponent withdrew from the tournament due to an injury sustained during practice. In the semifinal Aryna Sabalenka will take on World No.4 Jessica Pegula of the USA, whom she faced in the 2024 US Open final.
On her way to the quarterfinal, the Belarusian defeated Switzerland's Rebeka Masarova (World No.108) 7-5, 6-1; Russia's Polina Kudermetova (67) 7-6 (7-4), 6-2; Canadian Leylah Fernandez (30) 6-3, 7-6 (7-2); and Spain's Cristina Bucsa (95) 6-1, 6-4.
Two more quarterfinal matchups will take place in the evening of 3 September. Poland's Iga Swiatek (2) will take on American Amanda Anisimova (9), and another Czech player, Karolina Muchova (13), will play against Japan's Naomi Osaka (24).
The 145th US Open will conclude on 7 September. The total prize pool for the tournament in New York is a record $90 million, with the men's and women's singles champions each earning $5 million. Last year, Aryna Sabalenka won the US Open title by defeating Jessica Pegula in the final, 7-5, 7-5. In the men's final, Italian tennis player Jannik Sinner defeated Taylor Fritz of the USA, 6-3, 6-4, 7-5.
