Russian scientists identify soy-derived peptides that significantly boost endurance

MOSCOW, 5 March (BelTA - TV BRICS) - Researchers from several institutes of the Russian Academy of Sciences have identified bioactive peptides derived from soy protein that dramatically improve physical endurance in laboratory animals, potentially opening new avenues for functional nutrition and fatigue management.

In experiments conducted on rats, scientists found that peptides produced through the enzymatic hydrolysis of soy protein increased swimming endurance by more than fivefold compared with baseline levels, as reported by the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation.

Protein hydrolysates are created by breaking down long protein chains into smaller peptide fragments using enzymes. According to the research team, smaller peptides are more likely to exert physiological effects within the body. Soy protein was selected due to its availability, nutritional value and established health benefits.

This unexpected result led scientists to propose an alternative mechanism. Rather than acting as simple nutrient sources, the peptides may function as signalling molecules that enhance cellular energy metabolism in muscles and the liver. Researchers also suggest they could influence neurotransmitters associated with motivation and fatigue perception.

According to the research team, the results may contribute to the development of new functional foods and dietary supplements aimed at increasing endurance and combating fatigue. Such products could benefit not only athletes but also individuals exposed to high physical loads, chronic fatigue conditions, or recovery periods.
