Rostislav Vergun named head coach of Belarus' basketball team

MINSK, 27 December (BelTA) – Rostislav Vergun has replaced Aleksandr Krutikov as head coach of the Belarusian national men's basketball team. The decision was taken by the executive committee of the Belarusian Basketball Federation on 27 December, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Basketball Federation.

The new head coach will be assisted by coach of BC Borisfen Mogilev Andrei Krivonos and Polish specialist Wojciech Walich.

Chairman of the Belarusian Basketball Federation Maksim Ryzhenkov stated that former head coach Aleksandr Krutikov did a lot of important work, providing many young players with an opportunity to show their best. The main criterion of the coach's activity, however, is the team's good performance, which the Belarusian national team failed to do in 2019. Team Belarus did not advance to the FIBA EuroBasket Qualifiers 2021. The chairman of the federation named Rostislav Vergun (he also heads BC Tsmoki Minsk) a representative of a new generation of coaches that constantly improve their professional skills.

The matches of the 2023 FIBA Basketball World Cup qualification will be the first tests for the new coaching staff of the national team. The first matches will be played against Cyprus and Portugal in February 2020.
