MINSK, 26 June (BelTA) – The 2nd European Games is the celebration of sport and spirit, Chairman of the Belarusian Wrestling Federation Kamandar Madzhidov said in an interview with BelTA.

“I think that the 2nd European Games will contribute to the popularization of wrestling and sport in general in Belarus. The games is the celebration of sport and spirit. After the games we can safely bid to host any major international tournament and even the Olympics,” he said.

Belarusian athlete Azamat Nurykau will fight for the bronze medal, Ali Shabanau for the gold. “We have high hopes on Aliaksandr Hushtyn,” Kamandar Madzhidov said.

The head of the federation wished the Belarusian athletes to show their best, demonstrate the wrestling character and spirit. He noted that he is watching how the Belarusians are doing in other sports, particularly in beach soccer and martial arts.

Russian journalist Aleksei Lebedev believes that the European Games is a good tradition. “The more competitions we have, the better. Europe lacked such tournament. There are Asian and Pan American Games. But there were no the European ones," he said. Aleksei Lebedev added that Belarusians are good hosts of major international tournaments and make guests feel comfortable.

The 2nd European Games are underway in Minsk on 21-30 June. The games are featuring more than 4,000 athletes from 50 countries. Competitions are taking place at 12 sports venues.
