MINSK, 13 November (BelTA) – The Belarusian Ministry of Sports and Tourism hosted the ceremonial inauguration of its Honor Book as part of the celebrations marking the centenary of Belarusian sport and the 30th anniversary of the ministry, BelTA has learned.
The Honor Book includes four-time Olympic biathlon champion Darya Domracheva, 21-time Paralympic swimming champion Ihar Boki, three-time Olympic champion and best wrestler of the 20th century Aleksandr Medved, former BSSR sports committee chairman Viktor Liventsev, and Belarus’ first Minister of Sports and Tourism and first NOC head Vladimir Ryzhenkov.
“A new tradition has been established after three years of careful preparation. Our team researched archives to restore our full sporting chronology. A special council of coaches, athletes and sports figures selected those with the greatest impact on Belarusian sport. While only five entries are recorded, the book will be regularly updated with new names: our country has no shortage of legendary athletes and officials,” Belarusian Minister of Sports and Tourism Sergei Kovalchuk noted.
“It is a great honor to receive such recognition. I believe this new tradition will serve as a good incentive for young athletes. Another summit has appeared in sports, one that can be reached through hard work and persistence. I hope that in about ten Olympic cycles we will be launching the second volume,” Ihar Boki said. “Honoring legacy is essential not only in sports. It is important to set an example, to show the younger generation the qualities Belarusians possess and the determination with which they achieve their goals.”
