MINSK, 29 March (BelTA) - President of the National Olympic Committee (NOC) of Belarus Viktor Lukashenko congratulated Aryna Sabalenka on her Miami Open victory, the NOC press service told BelTA.
In the final match, the Belarusian defeated Coco Gauff of the USA in three sets (6-2, 4-6, 6-3). A year ago, Sabalenka also came out on top in Miami. Two weeks ago, Aryna became the winner of the equally prestigious WTA-1000 tournament in Indian Wells.
“Thanks to your powerful and confident play, incredible composure, and talent, you have managed not only to defend your title but also to win the ‘Sunshine Double’. Two victories in the finals on American courts in a single year is a rare achievement, which once again confirms your status as the world number one,” the NOC head said.
En route to the trophy, Sabalenka defeated Ann Li, Caty McNally, and Hailey Baptiste of the United States, China’s Zheng Qinwen, as well as world No. 2 Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan.
