Artsiom Koutsiukh victorious at 2025 World Youth and Junior Sambo Championships

MINSK, 4 October (BelTA) - Belarusian athletes won two medals on the second day of the 2025 World Youth and Junior Sambo Championships in Indonesia, BelTA has learned. 

Artsiom Koutsiukh won the gold medal in the U18 men's +98kg. In the preliminary rounds, the Belarusian athlete defeated Resulmyrat Gurbanov of Turkmenistan and Ilya Sukhinin of Kyrgyzstan. He then overcame Australian Odysseas Kolovisteas in the semifinal and prevailed over Russian Denis Kuligin in the final. Earlier this week, Artsiom Koutsiukh secured a third-place finish at the 3rd CIS Games in Azerbaijan.

Also winning a medal at the World Championships was Belarus' Ruslana Shoba in the girls' U18 -54kg. In the first round, the Belarusian lost to the future champion, Valeria Kozlova from Russia. She then proceeded through the repechage bracket, defeating Aruzhan Targynbekova from Kazakhstan, and secured the bronze medal by defeating Leyla Muradova from Turkmenistan.

Three other Belarusian sambists competed on the mat in Indonesia on Saturday: Krystsina Yausiuk (U20, -65 kg) was eliminated in the quarterfinals, while Ivan Shadryn (U18 +58kg) and Uladzislau Kuzniatsou (U20 -64kg) suffered defeats in their opening rounds.

After two days of competition, Team Belarus has collected five medals - two gold, two silver, and one bronze. The day before, Darya Navitskaya (-65 kg) became the U18 world champion. On the final day of the tournament, 5 October, five Belarusians will compete for medals. All in all, the world championships among boys U18 and juniors U20 in Indonesia has brought together 370 sambists from 34 countries.
