Kochanova lays flowers at memorial to abandoned villages in Slavgorod District

SLAVGOROD, 23 April (BelTA) – Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic Natalya Kochanova took part in a ceremony to lay flowers at the memorial to abandoned villages of Slavgorod District, BelTA has learned.

Natalya Kochanova together with members of the Council of the Republic, officials of the Mogilev Oblast Executive Committee, and the Slavgorod District Executive Committee laid flowers and wreaths at the commemorative sign and observed a minute of silence to honor the memory of people who gave their lives to save other people and territories after the Chernobyl disaster.

The Alley of Memory in Slavgorod District features the names of 19 out of 26 abandoned villages in Slavgorod District that were affected by the Chernobyl disaster.

After the ceremony, Natalya Kochanova talked with school students from Slavgorod District and invited them to visit the Council of the Republic.

Local resident Natalya Goncharova noted that although she lived away from Slavgorod for a while, she returned. “Our native land calls us back. I left Slavgorod to study in another city, but came back after getting my first-time job placement here and never left again,” she said. “I see how our district is developing. New houses are built, a kindergarten opened last year. Thanks to the government assistance, the renovation of the central district hospital, where I work as deputy chief physician, will start this year. It is great to see the district grow and prosper,” she added.

On 23 April, Slavgorod is hosting a meeting of the Council for Interaction of Local Self-Government Bodies with participation of members of the Council of the Republic.
