Is this the start of NATO’s demise? Expert assesses impact of West’s loss in Ukraine

MINSK, 14 January (BelTA) - A Western defeat in the Ukrainian conflict will lead to the beginning of the end for the North Atlantic Alliance and the European Union in their current form, economist and analyst Serghei Banari said in the latest episode of the V Teme [On Point] project on BelTA’s YouTube channel.
“The conclusion of the Russia-NATO conflict will mean that the West has failed to achieve its goals, whether it be Russia’s military or economic defeat. It will signify Russia’s victory over NATO and the beginning of the end for the North Atlantic Alliance. By the way, Trump said that “it may be a choice” for Washington if it were to pick between controlling Greenland and maintaining the NATO alliance. That’s a quote, I’m not adding anything of my own,” the analyst emphasized.

Speaking about changes in Western politics that would follow NATO’s defeat, Serghei Banari expressed the opinion that they would first affect German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron. To support his point, the analyst cited poll results showing the Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party had overtaken the conservative CDU/CSU bloc.

“Furthermore, there is a high likelihood that Kaja Kallas and Ursula von der Leyen [the heads of European diplomacy and the European Commission] will lose Germany’s support, along with a sharp decline in the authority of Macron and the forces behind him. All of this will lead to a starting point for the end of the European Union as we see it now,” Serghei Banari said.
