MINSK, 10 September (BelTA) – Closing the Belarus-Poland border will have a negative impact on ordinary people and businesses, Chairman of the Union of Poles in Belarus public association Mieczyslaw Lysy told BelTA.

“Closing the border will have a negative impact on everyone: ordinary Poles and ordinary Belarusians, as well as businesses. There are still ties between Belarus and Europe. The decision of the Polish authorities does not make things better. It does not benefit anyone,” said Mieczyslaw Lysy.

To illustrate his point, the chairman of the Union of Poles in Belarus described a common scenario: citizens of Belarus or Poland planning a trip to visit family, take a short vacation, or transit through the neighboring country. For these individuals, news of a border closure would be unequivocally negative.

“The full consequences of such a decision are difficult to predict now, but it is certain to be met with dismay on both sides. I am referring to ordinary citizens and businesses in Poland and Belarus, who would undoubtedly face significant social and economic losses,” he said.

A reminder, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk announced the closure of Poland’s border with Belarus, effective midnight Thursday into Friday. The decision is cited as a response to the upcoming Zapad 2025 military exercise, scheduled for 12-16 September.

Poland’s Minister of the Interior and Administration Marcin Kierwiński clarified that the border shutdown would be temporary but comprehensive, involving a full closure of all border crossings. The official resolution enacting the closure is expected to be published on Wednesday.
