MINSK, 10 December (BelTA) – New methods and innovative techniques for diagnosing and treating ophthalmological diseases, including Belarus’ advances in corneal and scleral transplantation, will be showcased at the 10th Congress of Belarusian Ophthalmologists, BelTA has learned.

The event will be running on 11-12 December at the Institute for Advanced Training and Retraining of Healthcare Personnel at Belarusian State Medical University.

The congress will serve as a platform for dialogue and the exchange of cutting-edge scientific knowledge and practical expertise in ophthalmology and related fields. One of the key topics specialists will address is transplantation.

In 2024, the number of corneal transplants performed in Belarus increased by 21.5%, with 78.6% of these operations carried out at Minsk City Clinical Hospital No. 10 that runs the National Ophthalmology Center. The hospital has performed femtosecond laser-assisted corneal transplants since 2012 and introduced Descemet membrane endothelial keratoplasty (DMEK) in 2019.

All donor tissue transplants in the country’s healthcare system are provided free of charge under the clinical protocol “Ocular tissue transplantation (adults and children).”

Since the establishment of the Tissue Biotransplants Department at the Minsk Research and Treatment Center for Surgery, Transplantology, and Hematology on 1 December 2020, the number of high-tech corneal and scleral transplants performed has risen steadily over the past four years.

The congress will cover a wide spectrum of topics, including the organization of ophthalmic care, diagnosis of eye diseases, ophthalmic surgery, medical ophthalmology, pediatric ophthalmology, ophthalmic emergencies and trauma, and rehabilitation of patients with eye conditions.

Interdisciplinary aspects of differential diagnosis and treatment will also be highlighted, with participation announced by oncologists, neurologists, and endocrinologists.

The congress will bring together leading ophthalmologists from Belarus as well as more than 60 prominent specialists from Russia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Israel, and Slovakia.

The event is organized by Belarusian State Medical University with the support of the Belarusian Healthcare Ministry.
