MINSK, 19 December (BelTA) - During the second session of the 7th Belarusian People’s Congress, Belarusian President and Chairman of the Congress Aleksandr Lukashenko supported the proposal that political parties should oversee certain areas of the country’s development, BelTA has learned.
The proposal was put forward at the congress session by Chairman of the Liberal Democratic Party of Belarus Oleg Gaidukevich. He suggested assigning specific sectors or regions to the four political parties represented in parliament, so that they will oversee concrete projects. “In this way we will compete and show other countries what real party building and genuine competition look like,” the politician said.
“I have reviewed this proposal and I think it is a good one. When specifying the program, we need to think about how each party can be assigned a specific direction. Not imposed, but discussed: what could be taken from the seven or more directions. When Oleg [Gaidukevich] was speaking, I was thinking about the directions and wanted to ask him: ‘What if a party were responsible for Vitebsk Oblast…’” the head of state noted.
The president’s remark about Vitebsk Oblast was met with applause in the hall.
“Oleg [Gaidukevich], I don’t mean that the Liberal Democratic Party should monitor it. We have stronger parties as well. If they oversee Vitebsk Oblast, they will need to work with the governor to determine how to proceed. I would only welcome it,” the president continued.
He did not rule out that parties could assume responsibility for certain directions and projects: “One might oversee aircraft production, another shipbuilding in Pinsk. It is a good proposal. We need to think about it.”
