Lukashenko slams Poland’s policy towards Belarus as opportunistic

MINSK, 12 April (BelTA) - Poland's policy towards Belarus is opportunistic, Belarusian President Aleksandr Lukashenko told the media on 12 April, BelTA has learned.

According to Aleksandr Lukashenko, he is not following the presidential race currently underway in Poland. The head of state said that he did not care.

“Poles got carried away with playing their games. Poles are our kin people, Slavs. We could live in peace, trade, and develop. When they imposed sanctions, we did not expel a single Pole from here. Many Poles work here. And they are welcome to work here. They work and treat Belarusians with respect. They [Poland’s leadership], however, decided to pursue such a policy. This is opportunism. They are opportunists,” the president stressed.

Poland is pursuing the same policy inside the European Union. This was especially evident a couple of years ago when Polish authorities started disputes with the EU to please the USA.

“Now Trump is in power, and he doesn't give a care about the European Union. The European Union is the biggest adversary for Trump. The leaders of the European Union were against Trump during the U.S. electoral campaign, and now Trump is paying them in kind. Now the Poles have gone quieter. They don't know whose side to choose. They have fallen out with the European Union. The USA is taking a close look at them. It is clear why. Poland is an ideal staging post against us, against Russia and other countries. Poland is a convenient staging post. Trump, however, is pursuing his policy. Poles have gone quieter for now. Why did they have to quarrel with the EU when they are fully dependent on it? What do they choose to do and where to go? It is ‘every man for himself’ now. That is why their policy is so situational. No overall concept. It is a very dangerous thing,” the Belarusian leader said.

“They seem to be friends with China. But if they get on well with the Chinese, they need to get on with Belarusians too. The Chinese will trade with them first of all (it is in their interests) through Belarus. Ukraine is shut out because of war. Istanbul is a more complicated route. Belarus is the best option. Both Russia and Belarus. No need to be at odds with us. We should live in peace and friendship. This is the policy we need to follow. Poland is not ready for it,” the president said.

Aleksandr Lukashenko added that the president in Poland is just “a puppet who walks back and forth the corridors in Washington waiting for the door to open”. “The leadership in Poland is a humiliation to the Polish people, their pride and dignity,” the head of state emphasized.
