Top Belarusian senator indignant about Western sanctions

MINSK, 25 June (BelTA) – Not everyone in the world is satisfied with stability in Belarus and the country's peace-loving foreign policy. Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Natalya Kochanova made the relevant statement at the closing of the fifth session of the seventh-convocation Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus, BelTA has learned.

According to Natalya Kochanova, in this period the country is still experiencing brazen economic and political pressure as well as deliberate interference in internal affairs. “It is obvious that not everyone in the world is satisfied with stability and calmness in the republic, with our peace-loving foreign policy, with Belarus' status as a donor of security and a negotiation venue,” she said.

In her words, actions of the collective West undermine the foundations of international law. They are primarily aimed at destabilizing the situation in Belarus, breaking the state foundations, and introducing new economic sanctions against the republic. “Everybody understands perfectly well that such a policy will affect the wellbeing of worker collectives and every citizen of Belarus. It is their historical error, for which consequences the European region will have to pay. They create a threat to the security of the entire world,” the senator said. “As our president stated in his speech in the memorial complex on 22 June: ‘Understand it once and for all: we will not surrender the native land, independence, and sovereignty to anyone. We will endure in any case!'”

Belarusian parliamentarians have repeatedly demanded that their Western colleagues should not break norms of international law. “We've clearly stated our position in statements about an attempt to stage a coup in the Republic of Belarus, about an outrageous incident with the state flag in Riga. Members of the Council of the Republic and members of councils of deputies of all levels turned to the world community with an appeal to speak up against an unwarranted, counterproductive, and discriminatory policy regarding the Belarusian state and its people, to stand together with us in defending the right to a peaceful life, to return to responsible and fruitful interaction for the benefit of all countries. I'd like to express my gratitude to members of the Council of the Republic for your civil stance on defending interests of the country,” Chairwoman of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of Belarus Natalya Kochanova stressed.
