Lebedev: Moldova, Ukraine remain members of CIS de jure

MOSCOW, 8 October (BelTA) - Moldova and Ukraine remain members of the CIS de jure, while Georgia has officially withdrawn from the CIS, CIS Secretary General Sergei Lebedev told reporters in Moscow while commenting on the statement by the Belarusian president that it would be nice to see former members to rejoin the "CIS family", BelTA has learned.

"Georgia has officially withdrawn from the CIS. Although it remained part of dozens of agreements regulating economic cooperation. It continues to participate in these agreements, although it is not a member of the CIS. Ukraine and Moldova legally remain members of the CIS. They have not withdrawn from the Commonwealth, and both states still remain parties to a number of treaties. Moldova has significantly reduced its participation in events within the CIS, but has not withdrawn completely. Unlike Ukraine Moldova continues to participate in some things," Sergei Lebedev said.

"As the secretary general, I have been actively working with representatives of Ukraine and Moldova for many years. And I also hope that over time everything will fall back to its place. Neighboring states should live in peace and friendship,” he said. “Therefore, sooner or later,  relations of good neighborliness will be restored. This is not only Aleksandr Lukashenko’s hope but mine too. We heard such a hope in the speeches of other heads of state," he added.

As BelTA has reported, the Belarusian president expressed the hope that the former members would rejoin the CIS family as he addressed the CIS summit in Moscow on 8 October.  “It would be very good if Georgia returned to our family, if Moldova resumed its full participation, if the Ukrainian authorities came back to their senses, and we participate in the restoration of normal life in Ukraine. I am absolutely sure that this will happen. It's just a matter of time,” the Belarusian leader said.
