MINSK, 16 April (BelTA) - Belarus is an important bridge between East and West with a huge transit and transportation potential, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of China to Belarus Zhang Wenchuan said as he delivered a thematic lecture on SCO cooperation at the Belarusian Institute for Strategic Research (BISR), BelTA learned.
“Belarus is rich in resources, has well-developed mineral fertilizers sector, agriculture and machine building. It has significant geographical advantages and is the SCO gateway to Europe. It is a bridge between East and West with a huge transit and transportation potential,” the head of the diplomatic mission emphasized.
He also pointed out: “Belarus is a peace-loving country that has established friendly bilateral relations with the countries of the region. It is an important member of the EAEU, the CIS and the CSTO”.
“All this means that Belarus can play an important role in the development of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization,” Ambassador Zhang Wenchuan said.
According to the ambassador, Belarus' accession “enabled the SCO to gain more agreement, strength and experience in regional security issues, provided the member states with new development and market opportunities, helped optimize the structure of trade and resource allocation among the member states, and contributed to the formation of a more stable transport and logistics structure in Eurasia.”
This year the Belarusian Institute for Strategic Research launched a series of thematic lectures by the ambassadors of the SCO member states accredited in Belarus under the auspices of the SCO and BRICS Research Center.
After our country's accession to the organization in July 2024, the BISR has been granted the status of a national research center of the SCO. Within the framework of this status BISR actively cooperates with the forum of SCO think tanks.
On 16 April, the BISR hosted a lecture by Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the People's Republic of China to the Republic of Belarus Zhang Wenchuan. The topic of the meeting was “SCO achievements and the importance of the Shanghai spirit, the main tasks of China's presidency in 2025, the role of Belarus in the SCO and cooperation between the PRC and Belarus within the SCO”.
BISR Director Oleg Makarov said that joint efforts will make a significant contribution to building up the dynamics of interaction between the think tanks of the SCO member states and will strengthen the foundation of interstate cooperation among member states, with China holding a special place among them.
