Services sector, high-quality roads outlined among Belarus’ priorities for next five years

MINSK, 23 September (BelTA) - The social and economic development program was drafted based on our capabilities, Belarusian Prime Minister Aleksandr Turchin said on the air of the Belarus 1 TV channel, BelTA has learned.

“We are yet to approve the new social and economic development program for the next five-year period. The head of state has approved the conceptual approaches,” Aleksandr Turchin noted. “When working on the program we proceeded from the perspective of the feasibility of the parameters we set within it. And, above all, our resource capabilities. You can come up with various interesting, even fantastic ideas, but you always need to understand the cost of their implementation. The construction of any facility or the development of any industry require resources. We understand the volume of resources in our economy, the budget's capacity, the resources of the banking system, and we have a rough idea of the volume of enterprises' own funds. Based on this postulate, we made decisions regarding our capacity to develop various sectors.”

The prime minister emphasized that today people are concerned about roads, housing, and utilities. “We understand that in the 21st century, the standard of these things must correspond to the modern development of society. Therefore, a significant portion of money, tens of billions of rubles, is currently being directed precisely to these areas,” he added.

“The development of the service sector is a priority. The structure of our economy indicates that the share of the service sector in GDP should increase. This sector of our economy should receive accelerated development. Moreover, we have fairly good competencies in this area. We have a good history and nature to derive more dividends from this sector,” Aleksandr Turchin believes.

The prime minister also noted the importance of investments in regional development. “Without investment, the country's development is impossible. It is clear that based on the results of eight months, these indicators are quite good. But there are indicators for the share of investment in GDP, and we are not reaching the levels of previous years. The task is to achieve levels of investment attraction and investment that ensure the country's future,” he concluded.
