Oil industry scientists from Gomel help increase oil recovery rate in India

GOMEL, 16 March (BelTA) – Oil industry scientists from Gomel have helped increase the effectiveness of oil extraction at six oil fields in India. The BelNIPIneft Institute has finished a major international project, BelTA has learned.

The BelNIPIneft Institute of the Belarusian industrial group Belorusneft has completed a project for the Indian company Oil And Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC). As part of the project BelNIPIneft specialists developed recipes for surface-active reagents able to increase oil recovery. The scientists had to study reservoir conditions of each oil field in various parts of India. The results were used to select compounds for increasing oil recovery. The effectiveness of the compounds was tested using reservoir simulation models. The oil recovery factor averaged 30%, provided Belarusian technologies are used.

The ONGC is a major Indian state oil and gas corporation. It accounts for 77% of crude oil extraction and 81% of natural gas extraction in India. The company satisfies about 30% of the country's demand for crude oil. The corporation participates in surveying and consequent development of hydrocarbon deposits in 26 sedimentary basins in India. The company is one of the key players on the Asian oil market. It is also present in international oil and gas regions.

In the course of implementing the project the Belarusian specialists had to deal with certain peculiarities due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It was impossible to deliver the necessary samples of chemical reagents because the borders were closed. Operations had to be confined to BelNIPIneft's labs due to morbidity. However, the Belarusian specialists managed to do all the work within 13 months. The project was lauded by the ONGC.

It is not the first time Belorusneft has worked with Indian partners. In 2016-2018 BelNIPIneft scientists provided comprehensive engineering and consulting services to Oil India Limited in order to rehabilitate the mature fields Digboi and Chabua.

Belorusneft is confident that the new international experience opens up possibilities for further presence and a stronger position of the Belarusian company on the Asian oil industry services market.

The Belarusian industrial group Belorusneft was founded in 1966. The company specializes in exploration, prospecting, and development of oil fields, well drilling, extraction of oil and associated petroleum gas. Belorusneft also offers oil industry services in other countries.
