Sajdik: Understanding of the need to involve IRCS in prisoner exchange is growing

MINSK, 3 August (BelTA) – The parties to the Ukrainian conflict are starting to recognize the need to involve the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) to solve the problem of an exchange of prisoners, OSCE special representative in the trilateral contact group on Ukraine, Ambassador Martin Sajdik told media in Minsk, BelTA has learned.

“There is such positive progress, from my point of view. There is a growing understanding that there is a need to involve the ICRC to resolve this very complex task,” Ambassador Martin Sajdik said.

He explained that participation of the Red Cross will provide objectivity and a basis for resolving the issue. “So far we have the lists from one side and the lists from the other... Who will align these lists? That could be the role of the ICRC,” Martin Sajdik emphasized. He expressed the hope that the ICRC will be involved in the process.
